However, the energy broker market, unlike that of mortgage or insurance brokers, is largely unregulated, and it looks to stay that way for the foreseeable future. This has led some energy brokers to mislead their customers with the choice of energy suppliers they recommend and the means by which they earn their commission. 

Energy brokers must legally disclose when they add a commission, otherwise known as an uplift, to a supplier’s energy rate. However, more often than not, energy brokers are not disclosing their levels of commission. These hidden (or undisclosed) commissions have a negative effect on all businesses, but especially small and micro businesses who can’t afford to overspend on their energy bills.
